Dieting has become such a popular strategy for people desperate to lose weight, but what if I told you it could do the exact opposite to many people. Most people believe that to lose weight and become healthy savvy people the key is to eat less but really that can cause a lot of damage.
Sandra Aamodt began her first diet at the age of 13. In the picture she showed it was clear she was at a good weight, but convinced that she needed to diet to lose it. She was on and off many diets for three decades and each time she ended the diet the weight she "lost" always came back. Most people don't know that hunger and energy use is controlled by your brain without your awareness. Your brain also has a good sense of what you should weigh. This is your set point and it ranges from about 10 to 15 pounds. It's easy to shift around this range with life style choices but much harder to get out of this range. Psychologists group eaters into two groups: Those who rely on their hunger(intuitive eaters) and those who try to control their eating(controlled eaters). The controlled eaters are more likely to over eat but the intuitive eaters are more likely to be at a healthy weight and think less about food.Learn to understand what your body is telling you, if your body is telling you to stop eating then stop. If your stomach is grumbling because you're hungry then don't try to starve yourself. Making better food and lifestyle choices play a big factor as well.
I thought that this was very interesting to me to understand how the mind process's hunger and weight loss/gain. In the U.S. 80 percent of girls under the age of ten have been on a diet and as high of a number that is, it does not surprise me. Weight loss programs are always trying to coax you with advertisements and deals to try their products. When in reality the weight you lose will come back eventually because the foods they give you to eat aren't any healthier than what you were already eating, just much smaller in portion size. Which can cause major damage in the long run. Instead of worrying about losing weight why aren't we trying to prevent unnecessary extra weight in the first place?
Your mind is more connected to the rest of your body than you may think it is. You don't need to go on a diet to achieve your health goals. Once you decide to make healthier choices and listen to what your body is telling you, you're already on track to better your health. If we told all those people who are currently on diet programs that there is a way to get better results and be much happier getting there, I think they would definitely be much happier.
